SUMMARY:2018 Suzie Q Miller Family Campout
DESCRIPTION:The Timucuan Longhouse would like to invite all tribes and members (and also moms!) to the 2018 SQM Family Campout\, which will be held February 9-11\, 2018 Camp Chowenwaw campground (the weekend AFTER Super Bowl). \nThe campground\, located just north of Green Cove Springs on the Black Creek. The venue is outstanding having campsites including a number of cabins. The campgrounds have excellent nature trails and also the Kiwita Nature Center. Chowenwaw has rich history being founded in the 1930s by the Girl Scouts. The camp is currently administered by Clay County. \nOnce again\, the highlight of the campout will be The Fed Feast dinner Saturday evening. As usual\, we plan to enjoy some outrageously good BBQ including ribs\, brisket\, pork loin\, and more. Other planned events for Saturday are expected to include archery\, critter race\, spirited tugs-of-war\, and zip lining. After the Feast\, we plan to enjoy an amazing pyrotechnics show and perhaps a dance with some great music for the group to enjoy. \nIf you can’t stay over both nights\, try to stay one night\, if you can stay overnight\, come by and enjoy the activities on Saturday and the Feast. \nSuzie Q. Miller was an active Federation mom married to Rodney Miller (Wild Horse) and mother to Page (Little Pony). She was known to be a great lady\, wife\, and mother who really supported the program and was active in organizing in many events including camp outs. After battling cancer for 5 years\, Susie joined the Great Spirit in 2010. SUMMARY:Federation Service Project
DESCRIPTION:This year we’ll be working with the Timucuan Parks Foundation with some “lopping and chopping” to clear the extensive biking and hiking trails at Hanna Park. We’ll meet up just before 9am on Saturday\, March 30th and be grouped with members of SORBA (The Southern Off-Road Biking Association) to guide us to the trails most in need of our help. We’ll be cutting branches\, clearing brush\, and dragging it all off the trails. They have had girl and boy scout groups with 5 year old kids doing this work in the past\, so age shouldn’t limit anyone’s ability to participate. \nAfter the work is done\, we’re free to enjoy Hanna Park and stay until it closes. Hiking\, biking\, canoeing\, beach\, picnic in the park\, whatever you want. The boys had so much fun at Hanna Park for their last spring longhouse that they’re going back this spring. If your girls haven’t been\, you should spend the day to preview the Spring Longhouse venue. \nNot only is park admission free that day\, but we have also arranged for free camping the night after our service project. Saturday night\, we have room for 30 people to camp in the special scouting area of the park. This is primitive camping only\, so there will not be electricity and no campers/popups are allowed. \nLast\, but not least\, the UNF Astronomy students will be present on Saturday night to let our kids look through their fancy telescopes. You really don’t want to miss that. \nThis is the only Federation-sponsored service project this year. Remember that two service projects are required to qualify for OWB. Let’s show up in force\, and help make a difference in “forest\, field\, and stream” this year. \nPlease sign up on CircleBridge before March 20th to participate in the service project and for the optional camping.
